There are sensible lingerie questions, and then there are the questions that lead to a girdle with fourteen suspender straps.
Our classic roll-on girdle is now available in red or black with a choice of 6, 8, 10, 12 or 14 straps. This naturally raises the question: how many do you really need to hold up a pair of stockings?
The honest answer is that necessity only takes us so far.
Why we recommend at least six suspender straps
A traditional four-strap suspender belt can hold up stockings, but it leaves quite a lot of the stocking welt unsupported. This may be perfectly manageable for a photograph or an evening spent looking decorative, but it can be less satisfactory once you begin walking, sitting and generally getting on with life.
Six straps provide three points of attachment on each stocking, distributing the pull more evenly around the leg. For most people, this is the practical minimum for comfortable, confident stocking suspension.
It is also relatively quick to put on. Once the straps have been adjusted to suit your height and stockings, six clips are quite manageable for everyday wear.
When eight straps may be better
If you have fuller thighs, an eight-strap girdle can feel more secure. The additional clips hold a greater part of the stocking welt and help keep it sitting evenly around the leg.
Eight is a lovely middle ground: noticeably more substantial than six, but not so elaborate that getting dressed becomes a project. If stockings are a regular part of your wardrobe and you prefer a little extra reassurance, this may be your ideal number.
What about 10, 12 or 14 straps?
This is where function meets theatre.
Ten straps create a more intricate frame around the tops of the stockings, while twelve and fourteen produce the unmistakable multi-strap look beloved by lingerie enthusiasts. The repeated lines are wonderfully dramatic, particularly in lipstick red and black.
Do fourteen straps hold stockings more securely than six? There are certainly more points of attachment, but that is not really why most people choose them. A properly fitted six-strap girdle already does the practical job very well. The higher strap counts are about the pleasure of the garment itself: the symmetry, the metal clips and the gloriously excessive appearance.
There is a small practical trade-off, of course. Fourteen clips take longer to attach than six, and each strap needs to be adjusted so the tension is comfortably balanced. This is lingerie for someone who enjoys the ritual of getting dressed rather than wanting to be out of the door in thirty seconds.
Choosing your suspender count
For everyday stocking wear, begin with six. If you have fuller thighs or simply prefer your stockings to be held at more points, try eight.
Choose ten when you want function with an extra flourish. Choose twelve when subtlety has already left the building. Choose fourteen when the sight of all those beautifully ordered straps makes you happy.
Our red and black roll-on girdles are made in Nottingham and fitted with adjustable suspender straps and metal clips. Whichever number you choose, the open-bottom shape combines stocking suspension with the smoothing fit of a traditional girdle.
Six may be all you need. Fortunately, lingerie has never been limited to what is strictly necessary.
